Wood gasification is a mature, proven technology — but it produces carbon monoxide, operates at high temperatures, and demands respect. Read this before you light anything.
Carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless.
A gasifier running indoors or in an enclosed space can kill within minutes. Always operate outdoors or with full mechanical ventilation and a calibrated CO detector.
Know the risks
Five hazards every builder must understand
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
CriticalSyngas is roughly 20% carbon monoxide by volume. CO binds to hemoglobin 200× more effectively than oxygen — you can lose consciousness before you notice symptoms. This is the primary cause of gasifier fatalities.
- Never operate a gasifier indoors, in a garage, or in any enclosed space
- Install a calibrated CO detector within 3 meters of the operating unit
- Test your CO detector monthly — replace batteries annually
- If the alarm sounds, evacuate immediately and do not re-enter until ventilated
Fire & High Temperature
CriticalThe combustion zone reaches 1800–2200°F (1000–1200°C). External surfaces of an uninsulated reactor can exceed 750°F (400°C). Syngas is flammable across a wide concentration range (6–70% in air).
- Keep a Class ABC fire extinguisher within arm's reach during operation
- Maintain a 3-meter clearance from combustible materials
- Never open the reactor while it is pressurized or hot
- Allow the unit to cool completely before maintenance — at least 4 hours after shutdown
- Insulate the reactor exterior to reduce surface temperatures
Pressure & Backfire
SeriousIf the gas path becomes blocked — by tar buildup, a clogged filter, or a closed valve — pressure can build in the reactor. A sudden pressure release or backfire can expel hot char and gas.
- Never close the gas outlet while the reactor is running
- Install a pressure relief valve rated for your operating pressure
- Check filters before every run — a clogged filter is a pressure hazard
- Stand clear of the gas outlet during startup until stable gas flow is confirmed
Tar & Condensate
ModerateGasifier tar is a complex mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), many of which are carcinogenic. Condensate from the gas cleaning train is hazardous waste.
- Wear nitrile gloves when handling filters, condensate, or tar-contaminated components
- Do not pour tar condensate down drains — dispose of as hazardous waste
- Wash hands thoroughly after any contact with tar or condensate
- Replace filter media in a well-ventilated area
Ash & Char Dust
LowFine char and ash particles are a respiratory irritant. Hot ash can remain ignition-capable for hours after shutdown.
- Wear an N95 or P100 respirator when cleaning ash
- Allow ash to cool completely before removal — at least 24 hours
- Wet ash before disposal to prevent dust and suppress any residual heat
- Store ash in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid

Most common beginner mistakes
Using wet fuel
The single most common cause of poor gas quality, excessive tar, and filter clogging. Check moisture before every run. If it's over 20%, don't use it.
Skipping the filter
Running syngas directly into an engine without filtration will coat the intake, valves, and cylinder walls with tar within hours. Always filter, always cool the gas before the engine.
Connecting to an engine too early
The first 10–15 minutes of operation produce the worst gas — high in tar and low in combustibles. Run the gasifier standalone until you have a clean, stable flame at the outlet before connecting any load.
Ignoring backpressure
A clogged filter or partially closed valve creates backpressure that forces hot gas out of unintended gaps. Monitor pressure drop across your filter and clean it on schedule.
Building without a pressure relief
A pressure relief valve is cheap insurance. Without one, a blockage can turn your reactor into a pressure vessel with no safe outlet.
Operating alone
During your first several runs, have someone else present who knows the shutdown procedure. CO incapacitation happens fast — a second person can save your life.
Frequently asked questions
Answers for beginners and advanced builders
The four questions below come up most often — and the answers matter before you start building.
Is it legal to build and run a gasifier at home?
In most U.S. counties and many international jurisdictions, yes — for personal use on your own property. But regulations vary significantly. Check your county zoning code for open combustion or air quality rules, and contact your local fire marshal about permits for combustion equipment. Most rural and semi-rural areas allow it with no permit required. Urban areas are more restrictive. When in doubt, a 10-minute call to your county planning office will tell you exactly where you stand.
Can I run a gasifier indoors or in a garage?
No. Full stop. Even with ventilation fans running, CO can accumulate to lethal levels faster than you can react. Gasifiers must be operated outdoors or in a fully open structure with no walls that can trap gas. A three-sided shed with open sides is acceptable. A closed garage with a window cracked open is not. This is the rule that kills people when ignored.
How often do I need to clean the filter?
Every 2–4 hours of operation with dry hardwood fuel. With wet or resinous wood, you may need to clean after every run. A clogged filter creates backpressure that forces hot gas out of unintended gaps — it's both a performance problem and a safety hazard. Monitor the pressure drop across your filter; when it rises noticeably, stop and clean it. Don't wait until the engine starts struggling.
Will my homeowner's insurance cover a gasifier?
Most standard homeowner policies do not automatically cover home-built combustion equipment. Tell your insurance agent before you build — not after an incident. Some insurers will add a rider or accept it with documentation; others will not. Operating undisclosed combustion equipment that causes a fire or injury could void your entire policy. A 15-minute conversation with your agent is worth it.
